Rochester and New England are no strangers to each other in Open Cup play, meeting in the Fourth Round of the 2003 and 2004 cups, each team narrowly advancing to the Quarterfinals once. The Revolution enters the 2006 Open Cup in the middle of a fairly successful MLS season, sitting second in the Eastern standings behind DC United. MLS star Taylor Twellman continues to be a dominant league goal-scorer and is in the running for the league’s golden boot award. New England’s attack has become more dangerous as Pat Noonan and World Cup goal-scorer Clint Dempsey have returned to the field for the Revolution this past month. The Revolution backline will be without starter Jay Heaps, who is serving an Open Cup suspension from the 2005 Fourth Round. Rochester will rely upon a home crowd at Paetec Park and a missing Heaps to continue their quest for a second Open Cup championship. Although the Rhinos are solid across the board, they lack a true offensive threat. The Rhinos team leaders, midfielder John Ball and goalkeeper Scott Vallow, must mentally prepare their side for a tough battle and each pull through with big performances in order for Rochester to advance into the Quarterfinals.
