2006 U.S. Open Cup Preview: Kansas City Wizards (MLS) at Chicago Fire (MLS)

Kansas City Wizards (MLS) at Chicago Fire (MLS)
Toyota Park, Bridgeview, Ill.
Wednesday, August 2, 7:30 p.m. CT

The Fourth Round Open Cup fixture between the Kansas City Wizards and Chicago Fire features two of the last three winners of the Dewar Cup trophy. These Eastern Conference MLS foes are have gone 1-1-1 in this year’s season series and are currently fighting for a playoff berth. Starting the season strong, Kansas City has recently struggled winning only one of their last eight league games. Even with the return of MNT player’s Eddie Johnson, Josh Wolfe, and Jimmy Conrad to the lineup, the Wizards have been unable to find their winning form. With the recent resignation of long-time coach Bob Gansler, the Wizards are looking to overcome their recent mishaps that have plagued their 2006 season. On the other hand, the Chicago Fire has enjoyed unparalleled success in the Open Cup. Along with an all-time cup record of 20-5-2, the Fire has been named Open Cup Champions on three separate occasions. This will be the first Open Cup game ever played in the Fire’s new Toyota Park and the first USOP home game for the Fire since 2004. With each team thoroughly understanding the importance of the Open Cup tradition, expect two inspired sides as both teams look to continue in their journey.
