U.S. MNT Gold Cup Notes

The U.S. Men's National Team completed it's third day of training today in advance of their opening match of Gold Cup group play against El Salvador this Saturday.  Kickoff at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro is set for 6:30 p.m. ET, and fans can follow the match live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics.  The U.S.-El Salvador match will be broadcast July 13th on Galavision beginning at 7 p.m. ET. 

THE EDDIE LEWIS EXPERIENCE
His is a tale any aspiring U.S. soccer player should read.  From a standout college career at UCLA, to playing for his hometown MLS club, to the uniquely challenging world of European soccer, Eddie Lewis has lived through it all.  Rebounding from a dismal 2001 in which the 29-year old winger learned first-hand the hardships of life as professional soccer player in England, Lewis would re-emerge as a force for the U.S. MNT during the team's championship-winning run through the 2002 Gold Cup, then proceed to become one of the key figures in the USA's historic run to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup. INJURY UPDATE
X-ray tests performed today on the right ankle of DaMarcus Beasley were negative.  The Chicago Fire midfielder suffered a mild sprain during training yesterday. Beasley did not participate in training today, and will continue to be evaluated on a daily basis.  Meantime, forward Clint Mathis experienced tightness in his right hamstring and spent the afternoon doing fitness exercises.

CONCACAF GOLD CUP FACT
The most goals scored in a game came during Mexico's 9-0 pasting of Martinique on July 11, 1993 in Mexico City.  Incredibly, Mexican forward Zague scored seven of the goals that night, also an individual scoring record.  The nine-goal effort also serves as the largest margin of victory in a Gold Cup game.
