U.S. U-23 Women Sweep England U-23s With A 2-0 Win

BURTON, England (March 14, 2008) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated the England U-23 Women’s National Team, 2-0, to sweep the two-game series without giving up a goal. The USA had won 1-0 on March 12.

Midfielder Tina DiMartino of UCLA had a goal and an assist as the USA scored in the 8th and 28th minutes. Goalkeepers Kelsey Davis and Val Henderson split the shutout.

The first goal came after a bit of thievery from DiMartino, who stole the ball from an English defender about 25 yards from the goal and finished into the upper left corner from the top of the penalty box.

DiMartino created the second score by penetrating down middle before playing a through ball to Katie Schoepfer, who got behind the defense and finished first-time to give the USA the 2-0 lead.

“Overall, it has been a good trip,” said U.S. head coach Bill Irwin. “Our team put into action what we have been practicing all week and today it showed in how we played. The results were good, but our overall performance is what we are most concerned about and it was good this week."
