Martinez Goal Lifts U.S. Over England at Mondial Minimes

LES BROUZILS, France (March 22, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team defeated England, 1-0, at the Mondial Minimes Tournament in France, behind a 66th minute goal from Carlos Martinez and a shutout from goalkeeper Earl Edwards.

Rob Derschang, who had entered the game just 11 minutes prior, played a cross from the left side, which Martinez brought down with his chest and fired home, giving the U.S. the only goal they would need for the win. Edwards and his defense, led by captain Perry Kitchen, picked up their first international shutout in the victory.

The U.S. will next play a placement game against China on Monday, March 24.
