U.S. Under-20 MNT Evens Record at Campos Verde International With 3-0 Win Over Northern Ireland
BEJA, Portugal (April 15, 2008) --The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team lost its opening game of the Campos Verde International Tournament to the Cape Verde Islands by a final score of 3-1. Brek Shea scored the lone goal for the U.S. in the 77th minute, but Cape Verde's lead was unsurmountable.

Heldon Ramos opened the game's scoring in the seventh minute, finding the end of a long ball in the box and taking two touches before blasting a shot into the far upper corner of the goal.

In the second half, Valter Borges doubled Cape Verde's lead. He got on the end of a free kick inside the box, and flicked the header just enough to redirect the ball past U.S. goalkeeper Zac MacMath and into the far side netting. In the 73rd, a loose ball in the U.S. box led to a Fredson Rodrigues goal that put the underdogs on top 3-0.

Four minutes later, the U.S. finally broke through. A long ball from Abdus Ibrahim was run onto by Shea, and the FC Dallas rookie blasted the half-volley into the net from the corner of the penalty area. That was as close as the Americans would come, finishing with a 3-1 loss.

The U.S. will next face Northern Ireland on Wednesday, April 16, in the second game of the Campos Verdes Tournament before rounding out their trip with a match against Italy on Friday, April 18.
