CHICAGO (June 2, 2008) — A hip injury has forced U.S. Men’s National Team defender Jonathan Spector to withdraw from Bob Bradley's team ahead of the team’s match against Spain on Wednesday. Spector has been diagnosed with a torn labrum that has failed to respond to treatment and has traveled to Los Angeles to consult with U.S. team doctor Michael Gerhardt. Surgery is likely to be required, which would sideline the 22-year-old defender for three to six months.

As a result of his injury, Spector will not be available for the 2008 Olympic Games, which begin in early August. The West Ham United defender made one appearance in Olympic qualifying for Peter Nowak's U-23 team, slotting in to central defense for the crucial 3-0 semifinal victory against Canada this past March.

Spector has struggled with the injury for the past month and featured less in West Ham United's backline as the season concluded in England. Overall, Spector made 26 appearances for Alan Curbishley's side that finished 10th in the Premier League.

The U.S. U-23 team has been drawn into Group B of the Men's Football Olympic Tournament along with Nigeria, the Netherlands and Japan. Nowak's team kicks off action on August 7 against Japan before taking on U-21 European Champions Netherlands and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Nigeria.

The U.S. is gearing up for their encounter with fourth-ranked Spain on June 4 at the Estadio El Sardinero in Santander. The match will be shown live exclusively on espn360.com at 4 p.m. ET, and broadcast on tape delay on ESPN2 at 5:30 p.m. ET and Galavision at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
