ABU DHABI, UAE (Friday, December 12, 2003) - The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team was 10 seconds away from an appearances in the semifinals until a second-half stoppage time goal and a golden goal PK sunk their championship aspirations today in the FIFA World Youth Championships. Freddy Adu fed Bobby Convey on a well-executed counterattack that gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute, but Argentina scored late in stoppage time. Ten seconds after the restart, the final whistle blew and the teams moved on to the overtime session. In the 100th minute, defender Drew Moor swung at a ball to try to clear it off the feet of Franco Cangele, but missed the ball and chopped down his opponent and the Spanish referee awarded a penalty. Forward Fernando Cavenaghi drove the ball inside the left post past a diving Steve Cronin to send the U.S packing after almost shocking the defending champions. Recap the full 100 minutes of action ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics. |
