The U.S. team was unable to duplicate its highly successful run in the U-17 World Championship two years earlier and lost three straight games in group play to finish 15th out of the 16 participating teams. The Americans lost their opening match to Japan, 1-0, and then scored three goals against eventual champions France, but still lost, 5-3. To close out the tournament the U.S. fell, 2-0, to two-time U-17 World Champion Nigeria.
