In 1999, the U.S. team earned its best result in the U-17 Championship, by finishing in fourth place. The Americans finished with a 2-0-1 record in group play, defeating New Zealand and Uruguay, while tying Poland. Next, the U.S. defeated bitter rivals Mexico, 3-2, on goals by DaMarcus Beasley, Jordan Cila and Kyle Beckerman. In the next round, the Americans fought to a 2-2 tie with Australia after regulation play but then lost 8-7 in an epic penalty shootout. The U.S. then lost, 2-0, to two-time U-17 World Champion Ghana in the third place match.
