The U.S. once again advanced past the group stage of the FIFA U-17 World Championship, held in Japan, but had a much more difficult time as they went 1-1-1 in the group stage, tying the Czech Republic, 2-2, losing to Columbia, 1-2, and defeating Qatar, 5-1. The Americans faced Poland in the next round, but did not advance as they were defeated 3-0.
