The inaugural FIFA U-16 World Championship took place in China and the U.S. was drawn into Group A with Bolivia, Guinea and China PR. Playing in front of huge crowds (the inaugural tournament still holds the attendance record), the U.S. were in all three of their group games, but only managed to win one, finishing in third place among their group. The U.S. fell to Guinea, 1-0, in the opening match in Beijing, defeated Bolivia, 2-1, in the second match, and lost to China PR, 3-1, in the final group match.
