Hailing from Santa Ana, Calif., target forward Christian Ramirez’s professional career has taken him from coast-to-coast as he climbed the U.S. Soccer pyramid. Playing the first half of his collegiate career at UC-Santa Barbara, Ramirez started turning heads at Concordia University-Irvine, bagging 41 goals in 42 appearances. After college, he signed with USL PRO side Charlotte Eagles, scoring in his debut. A year later he joined Minnesota United FC, winning the NASL Golden Boot in his first season. Having spent 18 months with Minnesota after their jump to MLS, Ramirez made the move back close to home when he was traded to LAFC and immediately made his presence felt by recording a brace in his first match. This dogged perseverance and goal-scoring ability lead him to receive his second call up in January of 2019. He made the most of the appearance, scoring in his international debut for the USMNT against Panama.
THE CALL
In January of 2018, Ramirez received the news of his first call-up to the National Team while on a trip to the grocery store with his wife and mother. When Ramirez shared the news, his mother responded with a story he had not yet heard. Twelve years earlier, Youth National Team scouts had approached Ramirez's mother stating that he was going to be invited to participate in an upcoming camp. For whatever reason, this did not come to pass and Ramirez's mother kept the potential invite a secret so as not to upset him. He ended up not playing in the January 2018 friendly either, and rather than let the setback get the best of him, he redoubled his efforts to get another invite.
A little less than a year later, the call came again. Ramirez found himself in camp training for a friendly against Panama. His dedication and hard work paid off and he netted his first international goal in the match, putting the exclamation point on the 3-0 win.
