CHICAGO (March 8, 2015) – Due to a hamstring injury suffered by defender Whitney Engen during training at the 2015 Algarve Cup, she has been replaced on the USA’s 23-woman tournament roster by veteran Christie Rampone.
Rampone has returned to fitness following a back injury suffered during the USA’s January camp that caused her to miss the WNT’s matches in early February against France and England. She has been training with the U.S. in Portugal and will now be eligible to play in the final two matches of the tournament.
The USA faces Iceland in its Group B finale on March 9 in Lagos, Portugal, and then will play a placement match on March 11.
With 304 appearances for the USA, Rampone is the second most-capped player in women’s soccer history and most-capped active player in the world. Should she see action, she would be playing in her 14th Algarve Cup tournament.
