U.S. Soccer conducted its Official Draw for the Fourth Round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, revealing both the pairings and the teams that will host the 16 Fourth Round games that will be played on June 11 and 12. The Fourth Round marks the tournament entrance for the 21 U.S.-based Major League Soccer (Division I) teams. They will join the 11 winners from the competition’s Third Round that was contested earlier this week (May 28 and 29).

The Draw produced a good number of intriguing ties between teams from different divisions as well as a few rivalry match-ups. Title holders Houston Dynamo will face high-scoring Austin Bold, while the lone remaining amateur club, Orange County FC, will take on MLS royalty and two-time Open Cup champion LA Galaxy. Now in MLS, FC Cincinnati will host Louisville City FC – the two clubs enjoyed a good rivalry when both were in USL – and the Chicago Fire will travel south to tackle regional adversaries Saint Louis FC in a match between two cities that enjoy hostilities across a number of sports. In the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers will continue their age-old battle that has been highlighted by its share of combustible Open Cup moments, while a burgeoning history between Charleston Battery and Atlanta United FC will gain another chapter as the two clubs meet for a third consecutive tournament.

After the completion of the Third Round, the teams in the Fourth Round were pooled geographically into eight groups of four, with five groups having one Third Round winner and three groups having two. A random draw determined the pairings within each group, with all Third Round winners paired to face a Division I team and not another Third Round winner. The pools created for the Fourth Round Draw will have no bearing on the pairings for the Round of 16, as new geographic pools of four (without regard to division) will be created from the Fourth Round winners to determine the Round of 16 and possible Quarterfinal match-ups.
