PRAGUE, Czech Republic (May 21, 2019) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team opened the UEFA Women’s Development Tournament in the Czech Republic with a 3-0 victory over the hosts as forwards Makhiya McDonald scored twice in the first half and Karlie Lema tallied once early in the second.
The U.S. team was playing with an entirely different roster than the squad that swept three games at a similar UEFA Women’s Development Tournament the week before in Portugal.
The first goal came in just the sixth minute when midfielder Summer Denigan dribbled to the end line and cut a pass back to McDonald who finished with her right foot from the six yards out.
The USA doubled its lead in the 18th minute of the 80-minute game when defender Macy Blackburn got end line and she cut a pass back to the crashing McDonald who finished with her right foot into the left side of the goal from 10 yards out.
Midfielder Emily Colton set up the last goal, playing a through ball Lema who finished with her right foot off a shot that took a deflection off the goalkeeper.
The goals were the first on the U-17 international level for both players.
The USA will face Ireland on May 23 and finish with Belgium on May 25. U.S. head coach Tracey Kevins brought a 20-player roster with all the players born in 2003, which is the birth cut off year for the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
To underline the development nature of the tournaments, each player must play at least 80 minutes across the three matches and UEFA recommends that each player should play no more than 120 minutes over two consecutive games.
