U-16 USGNT Caps UEFA Development With 5-0 Defeat of Denmark
Mia Minestrella Scores Twice, While Katherine Rader, Lumi Kostmayer and Sofia Cook Add Single Scores
BURTON UPON TRENT, England (Feb. 24, 2020) – The U.S. Under-16 Girls’ National Team defeated Denmark 5-0 to finish the UEFA Development Tournament on a high note with a second dominating performance in a row.
The USA lost 2-1 to Spain in its first game but then beat host England, 3-1.
In a match that saw the Americans outshoot Denmark 23-3 overall and 11-1 in shots on goal, the USA opened the scoring with a penalty kick converted by Mia Minestrella in the 19th minute. The USA earned the PK on a hand ball called on Denmark.
The USA made it 2-0 moments into the second half as Katherine Rader collected the ball near midfield, dribbled toward the penalty area and finished from just inside the box into the top left corner. It was Rader’s second goal of the tournament.
The USA effectively put the game away in the 55th minute when Allison Montoya dribbled to the end line with a defender in tow and crossed it to the center. The ball took a deflection off the Denmark ‘keeper, and Minestrella was first to the rebound to volley home for her second goal of the game.
Lumi Kostmayer added some insurance in the 65th minute, ripping a shot from 30 yards out that hit the left post and bounced into net. Kostmayer set up the fifth and final goal, finding an unmarked Sophia Cook who hit a one-touch rocket into the net. These were the first matches of the year for the U-16 USGNT.
