The murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis Police Officer on May 25, 2020, has brought the issue of race, specifically the systematic oppression of Black people in the United States, to the forefront of the global consciousness. Through protests, social posts, articles and videos, the topic has sparked long-overdue conversations and has moved many to action.
This week’s episode of The U.S. Soccer Podcast deviates from the normal format to share the experiences of several Black National Team players – past and present - for a Virtual Roundtable on Racism.
Charlie Davies, himself a Black former USMNT player, and co-host Jordan Angeli are joined by 2019 Women’s World Cup champions Crystal Dunn and Jessica McDonald, three-time World Cup veteran and the USMNT’s all-time cap leader, Cobi Jones, and current USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen for a powerful conversation about racism in the United States and in soccer.
During the discussion, the group touched upon what is currently occurring in the United States, their personal experiences with racism, and ways in which we can all work to uplift the Black community and other communities of color and to ensure that energy of this moment leads to tangible, positive change.
