Samantha Mewis and Alex Morgan continued their scoring runs and Tobin Heath helped Manchester United maintain its unbeaten record in the latest week of club action for the U.S. Women’s National Team players competing abroad.

The games got underway on Wednesday, Dec. 9 as Manchester City traveled to Sweden and defeated Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC, 2-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 32. Making her Champions League debut, Mewis scored the game-winning goal for City in the 76th minute with a perfectly timed header off a cross from Scottish international Caroline Weir. The goal capped off a comeback by Man City, which fell behind in the second minute but scored the equalizer shortly before halftime. The goal for Mewis also marked the third different competition in which she has scored since joining Manchester City in August of 2020. She has found the net in the Women’s Super League, FA Cup and now Champions League.

Mewis carried her strong run of form into Sunday’s WSL clash against perennial power Arsenal, scoring the equalizer in a 2-1 victory for Manchester City. The World Cup champion’s aerial prowess was on display once again, scoring off header in the 30th minute following a City corner kick to negate a goal in the third minute by Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema. Manchester City came away with all three points after a goal by Weir in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Mewis played the full match and now has three goals in nine WSL appearances this season, good for third on the team. Rose Lavelle was unavailable for both matches for Manchester City due to injury.

Manchester City hosts Göteborg on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET in the second leg of the Champions League round of 32, leading 2-1 on aggregate. The Cityzens then travel to face Birmingham City on Sunday, Dec. 20 in their final WSL match before the holiday break.

Mewis was not the only USWNT player to find the scoresheet this weekend, as Morgan made it two goals in two games for Tottenham Hotspur, who won its second consecutive game with a 3-1 victory against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The USWNT forward put Spurs in front in the 13th minute, tucking her penalty attempt inside the post. Morgan drew the penalty herself when she was taken down by the Villa goalkeeper following a slashing run through the box. Morgan also helped create Spurs’ second goal, playing a dangerous cross into the area from the left wing that resulted in an own goal by Villa.

Morgan, who scored her first goal for Tottenham off a penalty last weekend, played the full 90 minutes and has now helped Spurs to eight points in its last four games after just one point through five matches to open the 2020-21 campaign. Tottenham returns to action on Sunday, visiting Chelsea, which sits second in the WSL table.

Manchester United remains atop the Women’s Super League standings with 23 points through nine games after picking up another hard-fought three points from the 2-1 win over Reading on Sunday morning. Heath – who was named the WSL Player of the Month for November – played the full 90 minutes in the victory and created a pair of chances, as well as serving in the corner kick that led to Hayley Ladd’s game-winner in the 83rd minute. Christen Press was unavailable for Manchester United due to non-COVID illness. Man United faces Everton on Wednesday in the Continental Cup group stage before Sunday’s WSL matchup against Bristol City.
