CHICAGO (April 1, 2022) – FC Motown advanced past West Chester United SC to the Second Round of the 2022 U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 win in a replay of the clubs’ First Round match-up. The initial game between FC Motown and West Chester United on Tuesday, March 22 was replayed after the result was voided when the U.S. Open Cup Adjudication and Discipline Panel found that West Chester was permitted by the referee to field an illegal substitute.

The replay was a tense affair that wasn’t settled until the dying moments.

FC Motown’s goalkeeper David Greczek put in an outstanding performance in the first half, with saves from close range from Troy Amspacher and Spencer Burkhardt to keep the scores level at 0-0.

The second half was even tighter than the first. The West Chester United SC defense had to scramble in the 72 minute to clear a goal-bound FC Motown effort off the line. But those same defenders couldn’t do anything about the unusual goal that sealed the win for the home side in the 90th minute.

Australian Ryan Peterson looked to be headed down a blind alley near the corner flag. Instead of changing direction and re-setting the play, he launched the ball hopefully toward the West Chester goal. It somehow bounced off the post and goalkeeper Cameron Sanders to end up in the back of the net and send FC Motown to the Second Round -- where they’ll take on AC Syracuse Pulse (NISA)

The U.S. Open Cup now shifts to the Second Round where the 16 victorious First Round sides will be joined by 46 professional Division II (USL Championship) and Division III (USL League One, NISA, and MLS NEXT Pro) clubs. The 31 Second Round matches, which will all air on ESPN+. The action begins on Tuesday, April 5, with 11 matches, followed by another 13 games on Wednesday, April 6. The Second Round concludes on Thursday, April 7, with seven final contests.
