COSTA DEL SOL, El Salvador (April 16, 2022) – The U.S. Women’s Beach Soccer National Team defeated hosts El Salvador 3-1 on Saturday at Estadio Costa del Sol to win the 2022 El Salvador Beach Soccer Cup with an undefeated 3-0-0 record.

With matches played in consecutive days on El Salvador’s southern coast, the U.S. defeated Argentina 4-2 to open the tournament, beat Bahamas 5-2 in the second match, and edged the hosts 3-1 with two third period goals on Saturday, finishing atop the four-team group with nine points to lift it’s first international trophy - in only its fourth competition - since debuting in 2019.

USA forward Lauren Leslie was recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading the U.S. with four goals while scoring in all three matches. Kilee Quigley and Ali Hall finished three goals apiece and also scored in the three games.

After a four-day mini camp, the 10-player USA roster was reduced by one on the eve of the opening match when goalkeeper Melissa Lowder was recalled by her NWSL team, the San Diego Wave. U.S. head coach Morgan Church also had to depart to join the U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team coaching staff ahead of the World Cup Qualifying tournament at the Concacaf Championship.

The deep U.S. squad pushed through, with assistant coach and former Men’s Beach Soccer defender Ryan Futagaki stepping in on the sidelines, and veteran goalkeeper Christy Yount directing the backline for all three matches.

It took the U.S. until the third period of the opening match to get rolling. After Quigley put the U.S. ahead early against Argentina with a long-distance free kick, the South American’s took a 2-1 lead into the final stance. But the U.S. scored three unanswered in the final five minutes with goals from Hall, Tori Huber’s first career goal and Leslie to win its first match since defeating Paraguay at the 2019 World Beach Games in Qatar.

The team’s second match saw Leslie and Quigley put the U.S. ahead of Bahamas 2-1 in the first period, and Leslie and Hall stretched the lead to 4-2 after two. Ashley Triplet put the game away midway through the third with her first international goal.

With Argentina having defeated Bahamas earlier in the day on match day three, the U.S. knew it had to defeat the hosts in order to win the tournament. Ali Hall put the USA up seconds into the match with a deft lob to the back post, but the home side’s Fatima Vazquez leveled before the end of the second. Quigley put the USA ahead in the third with a rip from 20 yards off a quick restart from Yount, and Leslie headed in a long Hall pass to ice the game.

Leslie has now scored 10 career goals, surpassing Samantha Witteman’s 8 goals. Quigley currently ranks third with six goals, and Hall fourth with 5 tallies.
