CHULA VISTA, California (May 18, 2022) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team defeated Costa, 5-0, in the second of two friendly matches to finish up a training camp at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, located south of San Diego.
The USA and Costa Rica are both preparing for the 2022 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, which Costa Rica will host from August 10-28.
The USA defeated Costa Rica, 3-0, on May 15 in the first match and wasted no time getting on the board in this one as forward Katherine Rader scored in just the third minute of play.
The assist came from midfielder Korbin Albert who received a throw-in on the right side and crossed to Rader, who shot first-time into the left side of the net from 15 yards.
Just five minutes later, it was Rader who drew a foul in the penalty box and midfielder Sally Menti took the spot kick, burying her shot as the goalkeeper dove the wrong way.
Five minutes before halftime, midfielder Jaedyn Shaw made it 3-0 with class, lofting a curling shot into the top right corner from 25 yards.
Midfielder Jillian Shimkin made it 4-0 in the 76th minute after the ball bounced between Costa Rica and USA players and popped out to the top of the penalty box. Shimkin then blasted her shot into the top left corner as the ‘keeper got a hand on it but couldn’t turn it away.
The USA made it 5-0 two minutes from time after Shaw scooped the ball over a pair of defenders at the top of the box to forward Camryn Lancaster who then played it back to Rader to finish from close range.
With the goal of expanding the player pool, of the 23 players called in by U.S. head coach Tracey Kevins for this training camp and matches, only one – Menti -- was on the squad that helped the USA qualify for the World Cup and win the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship earlier this spring. Menti suffered a wrist injury during the USA’s first match at the World Cup qualifying tournament and was ruled out for the rest of the competition.
The goals for Rader were the second and third of her U-20 international career after she also scored in the first game. The goals for Menti, Shaw and Shimkin were their first international tallies at this level.
