Cupsets Await As Division I MLS Clubs Enter 24-Game Third Round Of 2023 U.S. Open Cup

Two Amateur (Open Division) Sides Take on Top-Tier Teams From MLS (Chicago House AC vs. Chicago Fire and Tulsa Athletic vs. Sporting Kansas City); Bleacher Report App and B/R Football’s YT Channel to Stream Eight Matches; CBS Sports Golazo Network to Broadcast Three Games; Another Eight Matches of the Third Round -- Which Offers 22 chances for Cupsets -- Streamed Live as Teamcasts.

CHICAGO (April 24, 2023) – The Third Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup begins Tuesday, April 25 with eight games and continues through a busy Wednesday, April 26 with 16 more. Of those 24 games, all but two could produce Cupsets as inter-division play dominates the schedule.

The Third Round marks the entrance of 18 Major League Soccer (MLS) teams from American professional soccer’s top-tier. The rest of the 48 competitors either hail from lower pro leagues: USL Championship (Division II), USL League One and NISA (both Division III), or in the case of Tulsa Athletic (USASA/NPSL/Okla.) and Chicago House AC (USASA/MWPL/Ill.), the all-amateur Open Division.

The two biggest David vs. Goliath contests are amateurs Chicago House AC vs. Chicago Fire (MLS) and Tulsa Athletic vs. four-time champions Sporting Kansas City. Both matches will be available to stream LIVE via Teamcasts. Overall, there will be LIVE streams for eight games on the Bleacher Report App and B/R Football’s YouTube Channel,  three more on the CBS Sports Golazo Network, and an additional six games available via Teamcast from the participating clubs.

Continuing its match coverage of the 2023 U.S. Open Cup, Bleacher Report will broadcast eight games on its app and B/R Football’s YouTube Channel. These include four games with exciting Cupset potential on April 25: Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (USLC) vs. Maryland Bobcats FC (NISA), Detroit City FC (USLC) vs. Minnesota United FC (MLS), St. Louis CITY SC (MLS) vs. Union Omaha (USSL1) and Monterey Bay F.C. (USLC) vs. San Jose Earthquakes (MLS).

Bleacher Report’s Third Round match coverage concludes on April 26 with four high-stakes Div. I vs. Div. II matchups: FC Cincinnati (MLS) vs. Louisville City FC (USLC), Atlanta United (MLS) vs. Memphis 901 FC (USLC), Nashville SC (MLS) vs. San Antonio FC (USLC) and Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) vs. San Diego Loyal (USLC).

The Third Round also welcomes CBS Sports Golazo Network to the Open Cup. The 24-hour-a-day/7-day-a-week soccer channel makes its first foray into the tournament with exclusive coverage on Tuesday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET of Charlotte FC (MLS) hosting one of last year’s giant-killers, South Georgia Tormenta (USLL1).

CBS Sports Golazo Network will also cover a pair of matches on Wednesday, April 26. Leading off the night is the Miami Clásico between Miami FC (USLC) and Inter Miami CF (MLS) at 7:30 p.m. ET from FIU Stadium. The game will also air locally in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale on TV33 (WBFS-TV). The CBS Sports Golazo Network nightcap features exclusive match coverage of the Portland Timbers (MLS) hosting USL Championship side Orange County SC under the bright lights of Providence Park in the Pacific Northwest.
