U.S. Under-17 Men’s Youth National Team Kicks Off New Cycle at Vaclav Jezek Tournament in Czech Republic

Head Coach Gonzalo Segares Calls Up 20 Players Born in 2008 and 2009; U-17 MYNT Will Compete at Next Year’s 2025 Concacaf U-17 Championship

CHICAGO (Aug. 29, 2024) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s Youth National Team will return to the Vaclav Jezek Tournament in Mikulov, Czech Republic from Aug. 30-Sept. 9 for matches against Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia. It’s the first training camp of the U-17 MYNT cycle, which includes next year’s 2025 Concacaf U-17 Championship and cumulates with the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2008 are age-eligible for next year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup. Head coach Gonzalo Segares has selected 18 players born in 2008 and two born in 2009 for the tournament- Borussia Dortmund forward Mathis Albert and Philadelphia Union forward Cavan Sullivan.

The roster features players from 11 Major League Soccer clubs, led by two players each from Chicago Fire FC, Los Angeles FC, Real Salt Lake and the San Jose Earthquakes. Four players are based abroad in Germany (two), England and Scotland.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • It’s the first training camp of the U-17 MYNT cycle after this age group participated in three training camps during the one-year U-16 MYNT cycle. Defenders Pedro Guimaraes and Gio Villa were a part of all three U-16 camps.
  • Seven players represented the U.S. at the 2023 Concacaf Boys’ U-15 Championship in the Dominican Republic, helping the USA take home its first title in three appearances at the tournament: defenders Guimaraes, Adrian Sanders and Villa, midfielders Luca Moisa and Jude Terry plus forwards Chase Adams and Cavan Sullivan.
  • Sullivan won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
  • Four players are signed to MLS Homegrown contracts: goalkeeper Aidan Stokes, midfielder Maximo Carrizo and forwards Chance Cowell and Sullivan.
  • Cowell is the younger brother of USMNT forward Cade Cowell.
