Colombia Defeats Argentina 1-0 To Earn First Points In 2026 SheBelieves Cup Presented By Visa

COLUMBUS, OHIO (March 4, 2026) – Colombia defeated Argentina 1-0 in the first of two matches in the 2026 SheBelieves Cup, presented by Visa, on Wednesday at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, home of the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer.

In a rematch of the 2025 Copa América Femenina semifinal, the two CONMEBOL sides entered the contest hungry for their first points of the tournament. Colombia fell in the opening match to Canada 4-1 at GEODIS Park in Nashville. Argentina also dropped its opener 2-0 to the U.S. Women’s National Team.

The first half between Argentina and Colombia produced zero goals thanks to some superb goalkeeping and organized defending from both sides. After Colombia played the ball out of the back, forward Linda Caicedo smoothly sliced through the Argentina defense with her dribble to set up a right-footed strike from close range. Lara Esponda’s block at the near post denied Caicedo’s early chance and marked the first save of the night for Argentina’s goalkeeper.

Twice in the first half, Colombia goalkeeper Katherine Tapia made key saves to keep Argentina off the scoresheet. In the 31st minute, Argentina nearly capitalized following a takeaway inside their own 18-yard box, but striker Agostina Holzlieier’s shot wasn’t enough to curl past the Copa América Golden Glove winner. Later, a lunging save from Tapia and some last-ditch defending from Colombia sent both teams into the locker room scoreless.

Colombia broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a goal from Caicedo. The forward glided up the pitch, cutting past an Argentina defender, then made an overlapping run to receive a pass from Washington Spirit midfielder Leicy Santos. From inside the box, the talented Real Madrid attacker scooped a shot over the Argentina goalkeeper to give her team a 1-0 lead and her first goal of the tournament.

The 2026 SheBelieves Cup presented by Visa continues with the second match of Wednesday’s doubleheader, which features two rivals that enter the meeting at the top of the table. The U.S. Women’s National takes on Canada at 6:45 p.m. ET at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus.

Fans can watch the game on TNT, truTV and HBO Max in English and Universo and Peacock in Spanish.
