COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 4, 2026) – In the most recent edition of the long-time USA vs. Canada series, the U.S. Women’s National Team were victorious once again after 22-year-old forward Ally Sentnor scored the game-winner off a half-volley in the 55th minute for her seventh international goal and a team-leading third of the year. Cincinnati, Ohio native Rose Lavelle earned the assist off a corner kick at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, which will be a soccer venue in the 2028 Olympics.
The win puts the U.S. at the top of the standings in the SheBelieves Cup, presented by Visa, with six points heading into the final match day, meaning it would only need a draw on Saturday against Colombia to win its eighthSheBelieves Cup title. Canada and Colombia, which earned a 1-0 win over Argentina earlier in the day, are both on three points, meaning a U.S. win or a tie against Colombia (even if the USA lost the ensuing penalty kick shootout) would give the Americans the tournament title with nine or seven total points.
The USA eventually asserted its dominance in the match, creating far more dangerous chances than Canada while outshooting its northern neighbors 18-6, but both sides struggled to connect in the final third to start the match.
The U.S. began creating chances around the 30-minute mark and a good one came when midfielder Sam Coffey intercepted a pass in the USA’s attacking third and played the ball to forward Trinity Rodman, who toe-poked it forward to Lavelle. Coffey continued her run inside the box and got on the end of a floated ball from Lavelle, but her header went over the bar. Shortly afterward, two more shots by Lavelle and Sentnor were deflected out for unfruitful corner kicks.
The first real test for Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan came in the 42nd minute. On the counterattack, Lavelle played a pass to forward Alyssa Thompson, who was making a run down the middle of the field. The forward took a shot from distance but Sheridan’s full extended dive to her right allowed her to push a ball that was headed for the bottom left corner of the goal out for a corner kick.
Sentnor had another chance right before halftime when she stole the ball from a defender deep inside the box and found herself one-on-one with Sheridan. The goalkeeper closed down the space well, but Sentnor attempteda low shot to the near post and the ball hit the side netting.
She would make amends 10 minutes into the second half.
The U.S. kept the pressure to start the second half and Sentnor finally found the breakthrough in the 55th minute off a low corner kick service from Lavelle. The cross made it through multiple bodies in the box before falling toSentnor, who settled the ball with her first touch before smashing into the back of the net off the half-volley. Sentnor has now scored in back-to-back SheBelieves Cups. She scored against Colombia and Japan in 2025.
Sheridan kept the U.S. from adding to the lead in the 79th minute after the Americans strung together multiple passes in the attacking third before Thompson had another go from the top of the box. Sheridan pushed the curling shot wide for her third save of the night.
Former Ohio State star and Dublin, Ohio native Emma Sears entered the match to rousing cheers late in the game and her hard running down the right flank helped the USA salt the match away.
Several young players had stellar matches along with Sentnor, include left back Gisele Thompson, who paired with her older sister Alyssa on the wing to create consistent trouble for the Canadians.
This match marked the fifth time the Thompson sisters have played in a USWNT match together and the third time they have started a game together.
The U.S. will close the 2026 SheBelieves Cup against Colombia on Saturday, March 7 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. The finale will feature a pregame retirement celebration for New Jersey native and U.S. legend Tobin Heath.
