How the U.S. U-19 MNT Secured a FIFA World Cup Berth
Gonzalo Segares’ side qualified for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup and 2027 Pan American Games after a stellar performance at the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship
Following its dominant performance at the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship, the U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team became the fourth U.S. Youth National Team this year to clinch a spot in their respective upcoming FIFA World Cup. The team recorded five wins and allowed just three goals through the entire tournament to secure berths to both the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan and the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
“I'm really proud of this group,” said head coach Gonzalo Segares. “They grew individually and as a team throughout the tournament. They were able to qualify for the World Cup and represented our country with honor. Now our focus turns to preparing for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and I know this group will keep pushing to represent U.S. Soccer at the highest level.”
Here’s a look back at the team’s incredible run in this years’ Concacaf U-20 Championship:
The U-19 MNT began the tournament on a high note, defeating Haiti, El Salvador and Cuba with a combined score of 11-0 to finish atop Group A. In the opener against Haiti, forward Dino Klapija smashed a shot into the upper right corner of the goal from just outside the six-yard box to take the lead in the 37th minute. Ruben Ramos and Santiago Morales both buried shots from the penalty spot in the second half to secure the 3-0 win.
The momentum carried into the second group stage match against El Salvador. Klapija and Ramos netted two more penalty kicks, and defender Christopher Cupps put the exclamation point on the win by getting on the end of a free kick from Chris Applewhite in the 89th minute.
Five different players scored in the 5-0 rout against Cuba while forward Jaydin Contreras and midfielder Xanti Oyharçabal both recorded two assists. The USA tallied 22 shots on target compared to its opponents’ four throughout the group stage. Minnesota United FC’s Kayne Rizvanovich recorded a clean sheet in all three matches.
The U-19 MNT entered the Quarterfinals needing a victory against Guatemala to clinch its spot in the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The team faced adversity for the first time in the tournament after conceding in the 36th minute. The USA fought back to earn the equalizer on the final play of the first half after defender Brandon Dayes was the first to the ball after Guatemala failed to clear a corner kick.
To start the second half, Rizvanovich denied a beautifully taken free kick by Guatemala, tipping the ball just over the crossbar to keep the scoreline even. The USA took its first lead of the night in the 68th minute when Contreras found Klapija in the middle of the box, and the forward sent his first-time shot flying past the goalkeeper into the roof of the goal. The final goal of the night came seven minutes later as Ramos played a beautiful pass into space for Joshua Torquato making a run up the left side. Torquato hit a left-footed shot into the far side netting to complete the 3-1 comeback.
“We battled a lot,” Torquato said post-match. “This game was very tough. Guatemala did really well in the first half to throw us off our game, but we felt very composed in the second half. We came out, we knew what we could do, and we did exactly that.”

With the goal of qualification achieved, the USA looked towards earning another tournament title, starting with its semifinal matchup against Costa Rica at the historic Estadio Banorte in Mexico City. Costa Rican goalkeeper Ian O'Rourke thwarted the U.S. with multiple saves in the first half-hour before the Stars and Stripes broke through in the 36th minute.
Midfielder Alexander Shaw intercepted a pass at midfield, and the ball fell to Ramos. The forward took a few touches before blasting a shot from distance. The ball took a slight deflection, sending O'Rourke thewrong way and finding the back of the net for Ramos’ team-leading fourth goal of the tournament. The U.S. extended its lead in the 76th minute after forward Tristan Brown sent service into the box from a free kick. With a sliding effort, Applewhite redirected the cross from close range to secure the win and the Americans’ fifth-consecutive and 11th overall appearance in the Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship Final.

The U.S. went on to face longtime rival Mexico for a rematch of the 2024 tournament final. The home side, aided by 36,000 fans in attendance at the famed Estadio Azteca, took an early lead following a set piece.The challenges mounted for the USA when Applewhite was shown a red card in the 45th minute after VAR review for denying a goal scoring opportunity, leaving the Americans to play the entire second half down a man. Cristóbal Alfaro sealed the 2-0 victory for Mexico in the 69th minute as the defender recorded a brace with his second header of the match.
Finishing as runners-up, the young Americans gained invaluable experience with an excellent overall performance throughout the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship. The team now sets its sights on both the U-20 World Cup and Pan American Games in 2027, as well as the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
“The team has already shown that we’re capable of doing big things,” Contreras said after the Final. “I don’t have a doubt in my mind that once it comes to the World Cup, we’re going to give it our all and make it far.”
