U.S. Beach Soccer Men’s National Team Shuts Out Mexico 5-0 To Win To 2023 Concacaf Beach Championship
USA Wins Six Straight Games to Claim First Concacaf Title since 2013
NASSAU, The Bahamas (May 14, 2023) – The U.S. Beach Soccer Men’s National Team captured the 2023 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship with a dominating 5-0 win over Mexico Sunday night at the Malcolm Park National Beach Soccer Arena. After back-to-back runner up finishes, the USA has won the continental Beach Soccer Championship for the third time - and first since 2013 when it became a bi-annual competition. The USA also won the inaugural 2006 Concacaf Championship.
In Sunday’s final, Gabriel Silveira scored twice and Nick Perera, Ricardo Carvalho and Alessandro Canale added one each. Goalkeeper Chris Toth played all but one minute of the game, as the USA became the first team to shutout Mexico in 10 editions of the regional Beach Soccer Championships. Perera led the team with nine goals and received the tournament’s Best Player Award.
As finalists, the USA and Mexico earned both Concacaf berths at the 2023 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which will be played in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in November. The USA has now qualified for three straight and seven of 12 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cups. In addition to qualifying by winning three Concacaf titles and as runners-up in 2019 and 2021, the USA also qualified for the 2005 and 2007 World Cups through combined Concacaf-Conmebol tournaments.
After winning all three group matches, the USA then defeated Costa Rica 4-3 in the Quarterfinals and El Salvador 5-2 in the Semifinals. Mexico also swept their Group before beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in the Quarterfinals and Bahamas 3-2 in the other Semifinal.
In sweeping all six matches in 2023, the USA posted a +27 goal differential, outscoring opponents 37 to 10. Silveira was second with eight goals, Canale was next with five, Nico Perea added four, Alvaro Franco and Carvalho three, and the team received one each from Toth, Conner Rezende, Antonio Chavez, Chris Albiston and an own goal.
Silveira scored in all six games, bringing his career total to 42. He has scored in 11 of 12 games in 2023. Perera and Canale scored in five matches, upping their totals to 113 and 68 respectively. Perera has now scored 50 career goals in six Concacaf Championships to lead all USA players, while Canale is second all-time with 25 goals in the last five editions of the tournament.
This is the U.S. Beach MNT’s second title in 2023 after winning the Olympic Committee’s (ANOC) World Beach Games Qualifiers in El Salvador in April. The team will be joined by the U.S. Beach Women’s National Team at the World Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia in August after the women also qualified in El Salvador.
