Emily Spreeman Records Second Straight Hat Trick as Deaf WNT Beats Turkey 9-0

Sophie Post Records a Brace Off the Bench; Holly Hunter, Erin Cembrale and Emma Neff Also Find Back of the Net

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Sept. 27, 2023) – The U.S. Women’s Deaf National Team stayed dominant at the 2023 DIFA Women’s Deaf Football World Championships, earning an emphatic 9-0 win against Turkey in its second match of the tournament at UPNM Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Coming off a fantastic four goal, two assist performance in Saturday’s tournament opener against Japan, Emily Spreeman registered her second hat trick in as many matches, tallying goals in the 35th, 36th and 89th minutes. Currently the tournament’s Golden Boot leader with seven goals, Spreeman also recorded her third assist of the tournament on Erin Cembrale’s strike in the 58th minute.

It took the USA a bit of time to break Turkey down, but co-captain Kate Ward unlocked the defense to set up Holly Hunter for the opener in the 24th minute. An own goal six minutes later gave the U.S. a comfortable lead and led the way to Spreeman’s first-half brace to give the USA a 4-0 advantage at the break.

On the other side of halftime, substitute striker Sophie Post who replaced the injured Casey King in the 17th minute, added her first two goals of the tournament within a seven-minute span when she hit home in the 57th and 64th minutes.

Second-half substitute Emma Neff also bagged her first goal of the tournament in the 77th before Spreeman’s looping 25-yard effort confirmed her hat trick just before full time.

In the day’s other match, Poland defeated England 3-1. With both results, the USA stays atop the group, tied on six points with Poland, but holding a distinct advantage on goal differential.

Next up: The USDWNT (2-0-0; 6 pts.) faces England (1-2-0; 3pts.) on Friday, Sept. 29, with a win confirming a top-two finish in the group heading into the round-robin finale against Poland on Sunday, Oct. 1. Kickoff of USA-England on Friday is scheduled for 4:30 a.m. ET (4:30 p.m. local time) from Kompleks Sukan PKNS Stadium, and is expected to be stream live via the Malaysia Deaf Sports Association’s YouTube Channel.

USA – Holly Hunter (Kate Ward), 24th minute: After sustained U.S. possession in the attacking third, Kate Ward won the ball at midfield and lobbed it over the top for Holly Hunter. The attacker made a well-timed run to beat the Turkey back line and volleyed a right-footed effort past Trueky goalkeeper Muslume Develi. TUR 0, USA 1

USA – Own Goal (Irem Kara), 30th minute: Hunter beat No. 4 down the right flank and crossed toward the back post where Kara’s misdirected clearance trickled over the goal line. TUR 0, USA 2

USA – Emily Spreeman, 35th minute: USA’s Gracie Fitzgerald crossed in from the right for Paris Price at the top of the box who hit her effort off the cross bar. Spreeman rushed in and headed home for her first of the match. . TUR 0, USA 3

USA – Sophie Post, 57th minute: Spreeman forced a turnover just outside the area where Post collected and hit a low effort that beat Turkey goalkeeper Muslume Develi inside the left post. TUR 0, USA 5

USA – Erin Cembrale (Emily Spreeman), 58th minute: Sophie Post won the ball at the top of the area and cleverly slotted Spreeman into the box on the left. Already with a brace, the striker centered for Cembrale who slotted home her first of the tournament from close range. TUR 0, USA 6

USA - Sophie Post (Mia McMurry) 64th minute: Gracie Fitzgerald’s long corner kick from the left was nodded back across the box by Mia McMurry, where Sophie Post settled and half-volleyed home from the top of the six-yard box for her second of the match. TUR 0, USA 7

USA – Emma Neff (Gracie Fitzgerald), 77th minute: A well-worked goal that started from the back when Mia McMurry drove a long ball up the right for Fitzgerald. The winger slid through the Turkey back line and cross for Neff, who chested home her first of the tournament at the back post. TUR 0, USA 8

USA – Emily Spreeman (Paige Beaudry), 89th minute: Without much pressure in the midfield, Paige Beaudry creeped up from the back line and laid off a pass for Spreeman. The striker uncorked a looping 25-yard effort that sneaked into the top right corner to claim her second-straight hat trick of the tournament just before full time. TUR 0, USA 9 FINAL.
