After a dangerous Costa Rica chance was turned away, the USA caught them out in transition with Quigley hitting a long, low effort that sneaked underneath Benavides and saw Haimes slide to push the ball over the goal line and claim her second international goal and make it 3-0.
Costa Rica then got on the board late in the second. Catching the USA out after a corner kick, Kelly Prieto drove into attack and rounded Sunseri-Warp before placing a low shot that crept just inside the right post and send the teams into the second intermission with the U.S. leading 3-1.
The U.S. restored its three-goal lead straight from kickoff of the third period as Quigley played the ball to Adler on the right flank where she blistered a right-footed effort into the top right corner from midfield.
Costa Rica dug back to within one goal after Maria Chavarria beat Sunseri-Warp from long range with 10:45 remaining, and then Astrid Solis put home a rebound to make it 4-3 with 8:20 remaining.
The U.S. responded midway through the third period when Batmani, who returned to the goal, sent a long throw out of the back to find Haimes who redirected her header into the top left corner for her second of the match.
Mindy Arias pulled another back for Costa Rica to make it 5-4 with 2:26 remaining, but Sunseri-Warp closed out the scoring when she put home a free kick with just over a minute left to confirm the 6-4 win and the USA’s second-place finish at the tournament.
