Trinity Rodman on Return of ‘Triple Espresso’: ‘Having My Sisters Back Is Amazing’
Rodman, Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson reunite on USWNT roster for first time since 2024 Paris Olympics

It’s been 22 months since Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson and Sophia Wilson have competed for the U.S. Women's National Team together, but the chemistry amongst the trio has not skipped a beat.
The forwards, known as “Triple Espresso,” spoke to media Wednesday morning on a video call full of laughs, some tears and finishing each other’s sentences.
“I'm very excited to have them back, especially off the field,” Rodman said. “Their personalities are amazing to have in camp, and just having my sisters back is amazing. And then on the field, I feel like our connection is so good. Being able to play with them again has been really good, and I'm excited to keep doing it.”
The last time all three strikers shared the field together was during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they led the USWNT to its first Olympic gold medal since 2012. Wilson and Swanson then went on maternity leavein early 2025 and Rodman dealt with injuries post-Olympics, though she has competed in all eight international matches this year.
Wilson made her return to the squad in April during the USWNT’s three-game series against Japan for the first time since the birth of her daughter in August 2025. The June roster for the upcoming matches against Brazil feature Swanson for the first time since October of 2024.
“I feel like the team has done a lot in the time that Mal and I have been gone,” Wilson said, “but they've done a really good job of making sure that we are getting caught up and feel like when we come back into camp, we haven't missed a beat and can get back on the ground and flying. And obviously, it's so good to be back with these girls.”

Swanson said she continued watching the team – both as a fan and as a player – during her absence and applauded the depth that head coach Emma Hayes has developed over the past year. She and Wilson also recalled their favorite moments watching Rodman while they were away.
“For me, it was when she scored [her] first goal with the Spirit after being out for so long,” Swanson said. “I was so happy for her because I know how that feels. Just to see that was so cool, and it was also an incredible goal.”
Wilson was able to see her favorite moment in person earlier this year when she attended the USWNT match against Chile in Santa Barbara, which featured a Rodman goal and her “Sexy Dexy” celebration with Hayes.
“I think the best part was the fact that she somehow got Emma to do that publicly,” Wilson said.
Wilson brought her daughter, Gigi, to that game and had her along for the West Coast trip in April. Gigi and Swanson’s daughter, Josie, have made frequent post-game appearances since their mothers returned to NWSL play, but with the long-distance travel from the U.S., they won’t be in the crowd for the Brazil matches.
“It's definitely an adjustment, because Mal and I have spent every waking moment for the last six and nine months with our babies, so it's definitely hard to be away from them,” Wilson said. “I feel like it's the hours where you're not busy that it gets tough, but their dads are getting very good quality time with them, and they're loved and well taken care of.”
While Swanson held back tears listening to her teammate talk about their kids, Rodman brought their spirits back up by laying across their laps, saying, “I’ll be your guys’ baby.”

Should Swanson see action in the June 6 match against Brazil in Sao Paulo, it will mark 604 days between USWNT appearances and 665 days since the 2024 Olympic gold medal game. She would become the 19thmother to play for the team after Wilson became the 18th two months ago.
Hayes previously spoke about the importance of getting Wilson and Swanson back into the fold ahead of World Cup qualifying later this year, but she also emphasized having patience as they return to form.
“Emma does a really good job at not putting pressure or too many expectations on us when we come back in,” Rodman said. "She takes it very slow and doesn't give us too much responsibility and lets us get our feet under us again. I've seen that with me, and then also Soph and Mal, and it's really amazing to see the trust she has in us to figure it out.”
Coincidentally, the last opponent the trio faced will be the same side they reunite against. Rodman’s lone international appearance in 2025 was against Brazil, and she recalled that matchup when mentioning what the team needs in order to come away with two wins this week.
"I think the biggest thing is controlling the game,” Rodman said. "They're really good on the mind side. They're good at getting set pieces and throw ins and getting the ball out of bounds, so being able to take the control and have it in play and dictate things will be important. They're a very talented team. They're very aggressive, and they always start out really fast, so it'll be important the way that we come out against them.”
